Here is an animation showing the 2009 polar vortex from mid-July to mid-October:

Argentina is to the top-right of the image; the South Pole is in the centre. The colours represent wind speeds over 100 knots. This analysis is for the 30-milibar level – approximately 80,000 feet or 24km altitude.

The image below shows the clear wave formations created at this altitude over southern South America on one of the best days in this season.
